This book recounts the independence and nation-states established by various ethnic groups in the Balkans during the first half of the 20th century. However, these states failed to establish a long-term, stable, and healthy political order, instead falling into the "coup trap." Frequent restorations, monarchical dictatorships, and military seizures severely hampered their modernization processes. The volatile international situation in Europe, the internal conflicts between different political factions, and the historical ambitions of strongmen collectively created the complex and ever-changing political landscape of the region during this period. The numerous coups in the Balkans not only reflect that simply copying the Western constitutional monarchy system is not entirely suitable for the national conditions of each country, but also, to a certain extent, demonstrate the long-term nature of building a rule-of-law state and a rule-of-law government.
