This book uses Taohuayu Village, located on the banks of the Taohua River in the Dongting Lake basin, as its narrative vehicle. Through two interwoven storylines, it presents the social changes in rural China over the past forty years, while simultaneously creating a vivid and well-rounded cast of characters. The first storyline focuses on rural transformation, using schistosomiasis control as a starting point to showcase Taohuayu's transformation from an impoverished mountain village ravaged by schistosomiasis and with barren land, to a modern village with initial prosperity. The work emphasizes the struggle of grassroots Party organizations leading the masses to transform nature: through infrastructure construction such as pumping stations and terraced fields, combined with agricultural technological innovation and ecological governance, the millennia-old predicament brought about by schistosomiasis was completely reversed.
