In this book, Su Tong departs from his usual narratives of history and his hometown, turning his gaze to contemporary society: A blonde girl from the north checks into a train station hostel; her scream in the bathroom heralds a sudden snake infestation in the city, with swarms of snakes everywhere. Ke Yuan, a street urchin, is busy collecting debts, leading to a death. The blonde girl and Ke Yuan meet by chance, but Ke Yuan is unable to be a true man… Focusing on the ordinary people surviving and interacting around the train station, Su Tong begins to contemplate the fate of a group of people abandoned by society.
