This book is an examination of the origins of the Latin American international legal order by Juan Pablo Scarfi, a scholar of international legal history. Unlike views of international law as a normative system spreading outward from Europe, this book turns its attention to the Americas from the late 19th to the early 20th century, revealing how international law was reshaped within regional political, academic, and institutional networks. Using "Pan-American international law" as a central thread, the author systematically examines the transnational legal networks formed between American and Latin American jurists, diplomats, and international legal institutions, with a particular focus on the intellectual practices and internal tensions of the American Institute of International Law. Through analyses of the principles of intervention and non-intervention, Pan-Americanism, and codification of international law, the author demonstrates how international law became a crucial tool for American imperial expansion and the construction of regional order.
