The protagonist, Tian Xiu, in her early twenties, works as an agricultural worker at the Poplar River Farm in Xinjiang. By chance, she meets Yu Hui, the farm manager's wife. Tian Xiu's husband dies unexpectedly, and Yu Hui diligently helps her find a husband. Tian Xiu falls for the Song family, and since she has no children of her own, she transfers her maternal love to the farm manager's daughter, Song Xue. When the entire farm is engaged in water conservancy construction, the farm manager, to boost morale, assigns his wife, Yu Hui, to lead the heavy manual labor. Yu Hui tragically dies in an accident, entrusting Tian Xiu with the responsibility of marrying the farm manager and raising their daughter in her care.
