We constantly trace and explore the motives of criminals, seeking the most subtle joys and sorrows within them, not to empathize with them or even forgive them, not to excuse their crimes, not to kneel before the so-called complexity of human nature, not to reflect on social contradictions, and certainly not to alienate ourselves into monsters—we are simply seeking a just explanation for ourselves and for those who still hold hope for this world.
