This book uses France from the 17th century onwards as a case study to examine the interaction between "territory," "space," and "sovereignty" in the early modern period. It integrates perspectives from cartographic history, technological history, and cultural history, focusing on the following questions: How is a nation's territorial space formed? How are the outlines and images of its borders created and disseminated, and how do they shape national consciousness? In daily life, how do people perceive and represent the imagined world constructed by power? Maps, as a key technological invention in this process, present geographical entities in a direct and concise way, shaping identity and national identity. With the rise of cartography, from boundary demarcation, zoning, and governance, to surveys, statistics, and mapping, and then to atlases and illustrations in historical writing, geographical space and its political representation became a key dimension in the construction of French national, state, and community consciousness.
