In early May of the lunar calendar, I went back to my hometown with my parents to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. After crossing a small stone bridge and walking along a cobblestone path, my grandparents and their little dog greeted us at the door. My mother brought fashionable clothes for my grandmother, and my father took out vacuum-packed zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), but my grandfather shook his head, saying, "When we get home, we should eat the freshest ones." In the kitchen, lotus seeds, soybeans, red beans, and other ingredients for making zongzi were laid out on the table. My grandfather took my father and me in a small boat to pick fresh reed leaves, humming a little tune, "Picking reed leaves, picking reed leaves," and soon we had a full harvest. Back home, the whole family sat around making zongzi. My grandmother skillfully folded the reed leaves, while my mother and I helped put in the ingredients and tie them with reeds. I told my grandmother that the Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, and she smiled and said that dragon boat racing is also to commemorate him. That evening, my grandmother said she would show me zongzi from fifty years ago. The next day, I discovered that they were actually small, colorful zongzi made of silk threads. After watching Grandpa's impressive dragon boat race, I put on his racing outfit, feeling overjoyed. This Dragon Boat Festival, while wrapping zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), wearing sachets, and watching the dragon boat races, I experienced the charm of traditional festivals and the warmth of family affection.
